SHAN STATE (EAST)- There is a plan to build a night market in Tachileik City, and after being built the current street markets will be removed and sales will only be allowed at the night market, announced at the meeting at Tachileik District Administrative Office on December 11 at noon.
Since Tachileik is a border city, where tourists come to visit, there are no organized markets but street vendors and stalls on the platforms along the city center. That is the reason for the night market plan but most vendors say that this is a deliberate reason created to sell shop space at the night market.
“How could the types of products usually sold in the morning and at noon be sold at night? They tried to oppress the grassroots vendors and sell shops at exorbitant prices. The administration teams are making money one way or another, nothing for the people’s sake,” a local vendor told the media.
“The site for the night market is still being selected, and the street vendors will reportedly be removed after the construction of the night market stalls. According to a person who attended the meeting, the two locations for the night market are marked on the way to Shwedagon Pagoda and the Golf Course Road and will be confirmed at the next meeting.
“ If the night market is open, it will be allowed from 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. Currently, Shan Yoma field is the official night marketplace defined by the previous authorities but I don’t know what they plan to do with Shan Yoma marketplace if they planned to (move and)open a new night marketplace,” said a resident.
