YANGON DIVISION – Local residents reported that the junta council started collecting the data of women for military conscription in Dagon Seikkan and Tamwe Townships.
Khin Maung Zin, the junta administration officer for Ward 94 of Dagon Seikkan Township recently collected the data of women for military conscription and threatened those whose data were collected to remain at home, saying they will be prosecuted and imprisoned if they fled.
“Khin Maung Zin and team started collecting the data of women for conscription. It is also said that they will issue the list and submit it to their higher ups. The data of women between 18 and 27 were collected. The families are in turmoil because even the youngest daughters were not spared,” said a resident from Dagon Seikkan Township.
It is also said that the ward administration team for Ward 94 told the families that they can be erased from the name list for 70 lakhs Kyats.
Similarly in Tamwe Township, the data of women eligible for military conscription was collected in Kyaukmyaung and several other wards. However, they didn’t give a clear answer when asked when the women will be drafted, replying instead that they were just following orders from the Township administration team.
The junta council’s conscription act requires women between 18 and 27 to serve in the military but the age limit is raised to 35 if the women are from a skilled profession.
