MYANMAR – A committee member of Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM), Ko Thike Htun Oo said that there is investigation needed on the announcement made by the prison officials regarding the sudden death of Ko Thura Aung (Ko Kalar Gyi), due to acute heart attack on January 5.
Political prisoner Ko Thura Aung, 32 years old, was a healthy person without any heart related ailment. The prison officials announced that his death was due to heart attack. Therefore, there is investigation need to scrutinize the credibility of this statement , said by Political Prisoners Network Myanmar ( PPNM).
“Deaths caused by health issue have been increasing in the prison. There were about 34 political prisoners passed away due to insufficient health care in 2024. Even two in this month. Plus, it is hard to know the other deaths. This is the very concerning issue. I want to urge the associations such as ICRC to try and get permit as soon as possible for providing healthcare to prisoners and conduct healthcare need assessment in the prisons”, said Ko Thike Htun Oo.
Ko Thura Aung was arrested on 23rd June 2024 and detained in Tharyarwaddy prison, Bago region ( Male Building No.4 ) and sentenced for 3 years by penal code 23(A) of weapon law.
Due to insufficient healthcare in the prisons of the junta military, total 22 political prisoners died in 2024- 3 women, 18 men and 1 LGBT, stated by the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).
