A 23-year-old man named Maung Kyaw Ko Ko Khant has taken his own life by hanging in East Dagon Township, Yangon Region, after receiving military conscription orders, according to local residents. Maung Kyaw Ko Ko Khant, who lived at No. 424/B on Padamya Street in Ward 8 of East Dagon Township, had been summoned for military service as part of Training Batch 13, scheduled to begin in May. He took his life by hanging on the morning of May 6, following the conscription notice. Local residents reported that Ward 8 Administrator Hla Thein, Hundred Houses Leader Win Myint, and conscription team leader Zaw Latt, who serve under the military council’s administrative mechanism, came to serve the conscription notice to Ko Kyaw Ko Ko Khant on the evening of May 5.
The funeral of Ko Kyaw Ko Ko Khant, who ended his life due to the psychological distress caused by military conscription, was held at Yeway Cemetery in Yangon at 3 PM on May 7. Local residents report that young people across the country are experiencing severe psychological stress and fear due to the military council’s forced conscription and mandatory military training programs. Some youth are fleeing to avoid conscription, while others, overwhelmed by the pressure, have resorted to taking their own lives. The situation highlights the devastating impact of the military council’s forced recruitment practices on Myanmar’s young population.
