A young man from Shwepyithar Township, who was forcibly detained for military service at the Htaukkyant interrogation center in Hlaing Township, Yangon Region, has died after jumping from a two-story building. According to local sources, the incident occurred around 3 PM on July 9th. The deceased was identified as a person suffering from mental illness, aged between 20 and 25 years old, described as fair-skinned, well-groomed, and tall in stature. He had been forcibly brought from Shwepyithar Township approximately 10 days before the incident.
Sources confirmed that the young man had a history of frequent hospital visits due to his mental health condition. After the jump, military council troops transported him to the 1000-bed Military Hospital in Mingaladon, but due to the severity of his injuries sustained from falling onto the concrete surface, he passed away around 10 PM. Prior to this incident, on July 5th, a similar case occurred where another person with mental illness jumped from the building, though that individual survived the fall.
The Htaukkyant interrogation center serves as a detention facility where young people from various townships across Yangon Region are forcibly held for military recruitment. Currently, more than 40 young people from Shwepyithar Township alone are being detained at the facility, according to confirmed reports from local sources. This incident highlights the ongoing practice of forced recruitment by the military council, particularly affecting vulnerable individuals, including those with mental health conditions. The facility has become notorious as a collection point for the military council’s forced recruitment efforts, with numerous young people from different townships being held against their will.
