The Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) announced on March 29 that due to earthquake damage, Yangon will only receive electricity for 4 hours per day on a rotating schedule. According to the announcement, townships within Yangon Region will be divided into six groups, with each group receiving power for 4 hours, primarily focusing on ensuring water supply capabilities.
The earthquake that struck yesterday has caused significant damage to power generation equipment, substations, and transmission lines within the power distribution system. Due to these damages and the resulting inability to connect to the main power grid, gas-powered power plants within Yangon Region are working at maximum capacity to generate and distribute electricity during this period of disruption.
The new power distribution schedule, which began at 5 AM today, prioritizes water supply for Yangon residents. The earthquake’s impact on the electrical infrastructure has also affected the water supply system, necessitating this emergency measure to ensure residents have access to drinking water. The power distribution plan has been specifically designed to maintain essential water pumping operations across the city’s various districts.
