During his visit to China, military council leader Min Aung Hlaing met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where discussions primarily focused on border stability and the protection of Chinese economic interests. Xi Jinping directly requested joint maintenance of peace and stability in the China-Myanmar border region and demanded guarantees for the safety of Chinese projects, personnel, and organizations operating within Myanmar. The meeting highlighted the increasing concerns about security in the border regions and the protection of Chinese investments in Myanmar.
Min Aung Hlaing expressed his commitment to the One China Policy and acknowledged China’s positive role in maintaining peace and stability in northern Myanmar. In response, President Xi emphasized China’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty, security, and development interests. The Chinese leader also outlined his country’s position on supporting Myanmar’s post-earthquake reconstruction efforts, improving people’s livelihood, and promoting unity among various political forces within the country for stability and development.
The discussions also encompassed plans to accelerate projects under the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, enhance economic and trade cooperation, and jointly combat cross-border crimes. This marks Min Aung Hlaing’s second visit to China, scheduled from August 30 to September 6. The meeting underscores the complex relationship between China and Myanmar, particularly focusing on border security and economic cooperation. China’s interests in Myanmar remain significant, with numerous infrastructure projects and investments requiring protection and security guarantees from the Myanmar authorities.
