The Myanmar Plaza management announced on August 6 that they have enhanced their security measures following a fatal stabbing incident where a 59-year-old woman was killed in the shopping center’s parking area. The incident occurred on August 5 at approximately 5:20 PM when Daw San San Aye was attacked by two individuals with knives, resulting in her death from excessive bleeding before reaching the hospital, as reported by her family through social media. Multiple agencies, including the township police force, Criminal Investigation Department, military intelligence, and local militia groups, are currently investigating the case to apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible.
According to a police source from Yankin Township, the incident site’s location in a central urban area, equipped with CCTV cameras at intersections and traffic signals, and its proximity to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ passport office, has led to high-level military authorities ordering an expedited investigation. The source indicated that various teams are collaborating to analyze available CCTV footage and detailed incident information. Due to significant public concern, superior officers have emphasized the urgency of apprehending the suspects. The case has garnered particular attention due to its occurrence in a prominent public location and its proximity to government facilities.
In their official statement, the Myanmar Plaza management explained that despite immediate emergency response efforts to transport the victim to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries before arrival. They described the incident as an unexpected occurrence and assured that they are working closely with local police authorities in accordance with proper procedures to support the investigation for swift arrest of the perpetrators. The management has also implemented immediate security enhancements, including increased security personnel deployment in parking areas and other crucial locations throughout the shopping center, along with improvements to their overall security systems to ensure the safety of shoppers and visitors. It’s worth noting that Myanmar Plaza had previously faced public boycott in November 2021 after its security staff were involved in the violent suppression and arrest of young anti-military regime protesters.
