On April 13, the day before Thingyan Water Festival, the military council conducted an aerial attack on a monastery in Letma village, Taze Township, Sagaing Region, resulting in the death of a civilian woman. The airstrike was carried out at approximately 3:36 PM by two fighter jets from the military council’s Tatmadaw Air Base in Tataoo and Meiktila (Shan Tae) Air Base.
The attack claimed the life of Ma Pwar Oo, aged 30, who died instantly, while U Nyo Lin, aged 40, sustained severe injuries. According to an official from Battalion 7 in Shwebo District, the attack was jointly conducted by a fighter jet from Tataoo Air Base and a MiG-29 fighter jet from Meiktila (Shan Tae) Air Base.
Such deliberate attacks by military council forces on civilian areas and religious buildings have been occurring frequently since the military coup, resulting in continuous civilian casualties. The monastery in Letma village serves as a religious center for local residents and has been a shelter for civilians. This incident represents another example of the military council’s ongoing campaign of violence against civilian targets, including religious structures that traditionally serve as sanctuaries for the local population.
