Sean O’Neill, a senior official from the US Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, has called on the terrorist military council to immediately cease its violence and release all those who have been unjustly detained. These statements were made during the 37th US-ASEAN Dialogue held in Cambodia, where he emphasized that the United States is working closely with ASEAN to facilitate Myanmar’s return to a genuine democratic path in accordance with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.
The United States has directly demanded that the military council immediately stop its violence against Myanmar’s people, release all those who have been unjustly detained, including political prisoners, and allow unhindered access to humanitarian assistance for all those in need. Additionally, the US expressed condolences for the lives lost in both Myanmar and Thailand due to the March 28 earthquake and committed to continuing humanitarian support throughout the extended recovery period. The US government has consistently maintained its position of condemning the military’s actions, human rights violations, and the deterioration of democratic institutions in Myanmar since the military seized power.
The United States continues to express deep concern over the ongoing civilian casualties, detentions, and displacement caused by the military council’s oppressive actions. The US government maintains its implementation of economic sanctions, travel restrictions, and asset controls against the military council while consistently advocating for the restoration of democracy and respect for human rights in Myanmar. The American stance remains firmly aligned with the Myanmar people’s aspirations for democracy, consistently opposing the military council’s brutal actions against its own citizens and supporting international efforts to restore civilian governance in the country.
