Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has stated that despite repeated calls from the UN and ASEAN for the military to stop its violence, the situation in Myanmar has significantly deteriorated, with civilian suffering reaching its worst levels. This statement was made during a face-to-face informal meeting of the UN General Assembly held at UN Headquarters in New York on June 10.
The Ambassador emphasized that Myanmar’s political, security, economic, humanitarian, and human rights conditions have continued to worsen over the past four years. This deterioration has notably impacted the country’s development, with civilian suffering reaching unprecedented levels. He stressed the critical importance of completely stopping the military’s airstrikes and bombing campaigns against civilian populations. The Ambassador urged member states to immediately cease providing weapons, ammunition, aviation fuel, and financial support to the military council, stating clearly that any assistance provided to the military regime, whether direct or indirect, enables further killings of civilians.
The Ambassador detailed how Myanmar’s civilians are living in daily fear due to the military’s atrocities, including killings, arbitrary arrests, forced military recruitment, sexual violence, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, and aerial bombardments. He emphasized the urgent need for swift and effective resolution of Myanmar’s crisis, highlighting that the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in desperate need must be a top priority. The Ambassador also stressed the importance of rejecting the military regime’s fraudulent elections and emphasized that any dialogue regarding Myanmar’s future must align with the people’s wishes and interests.
U Kyaw Moe Tun called for the United Nations to take a responsible role in protecting civilians and maintaining peace and stability. He highlighted the importance of effective, people-centered regional organizations and neighboring countries in addressing the crisis. The Ambassador emphasized that any inclusive dialogue concerning Myanmar’s future must fundamentally align with the people’s desires and interests. He particularly stressed the urgent need for immediate cessation of all forms of support to the military council, as such support enables the continued persecution of Myanmar’s civilian population.
