A tragic incident occurred in Kyaukme Township, Shan State, where heavy rainfall caused a dam to breach, leading to flooding that swept away two vehicles and resulted in two fatalities. The incident took place in the afternoon of August 6 in Naung Pein Ward 5, when intense rainfall caused the Lat Pa Dam to break. The resulting flood waters swept across the main road in front of Shwe La Min Oil Shop, carrying away both a private car and a six-wheeler truck that were attempting to cross at the time. Local residents reported the details of the incident to local news outlets.
Of the two drivers whose vehicles were swept away by the flood waters, one was found alive in the Ywar Ma Gyi area, while the other unfortunately lost their life. The body of the deceased driver was recovered the next day, August 7, by rescue workers, as confirmed by local residents. In a related incident, U Di Ya, a 51-year-old internally displaced person traveling by motorcycle from Khanar Sho village in Nawnghkio Township to Naung Pein village, was also swept away by the flood waters near Nam Hu village. His body was discovered on the morning of August 7, according to an announcement by the Kan Lint Let Social Welfare Association.
According to a local resident’s account, the accident occurred when drivers potentially underestimated the severity of the water current while attempting to cross. The heavy rainfall had caused the dam water to rush down with significant force, leading to the vehicles being swept away. The natural disaster has caused considerable concern among local residents, who are now taking extra precautions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The community continues to mourn the loss of life while remaining vigilant about the ongoing risks posed by severe weather conditions in the area.
