
Two civilians were killed and one woman was severely injured due to shooting by the terrorist military in Hpakant city, Kachin State, according to local sources. On September 20 at 11:30 PM, the military council forces from Hpakant Strategic Hill fired heavy weapons toward Ward 3 in Sai Taung village tract. The attack resulted in severe injuries to a local woman who was hit in the thigh by artillery fire, and numerous houses were damaged in the incident.
According to local residents, this attack occurred without any ongoing fighting and was a deliberate random shooting by the military. Additionally, that same evening, the military shot and killed two civilian men near Pay Oo Tea Shop at the border of Lon Khin and Maw Si Sa villages in Hpakant Township, and near a under-construction Rakhine traditional office building in Maw Si Sa village. Local sources confirmed these killings were unprovoked attacks on civilians.
Since the arrival of military columns in Hpakant, more than 80 civilians have been killed and nearly 300 have been injured. Furthermore, tens of thousands of residents from 15 villages in western Hpakant have been forced to flee their homes as internally displaced persons. Local residents report living in constant fear for their lives due to the military’s violence, facing daily threats to their safety. The military’s artillery attacks have resulted in widespread destruction of homes, suspension of business activities, and closure of schools, severely impacting the daily lives of local residents. The ongoing military operations have created a humanitarian crisis in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence and displacement.
