
In Myawaddy, Karen State, the Thaungyin River has exceeded the danger level by approximately 9.5 feet and is expected to rise another 3 feet, causing flood-related hardships for local residents. According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the river water level began steadily rising from around 4 PM on July 23, surpassing the city’s danger level of 963 centimeters. Currently, seven flood relief camps have been established and are providing shelter to displaced local residents.
The flooding has severely affected low-lying areas of the city, including Kyanchin Road, Ward 4 lower areas near Kyaukphya Gate, Ward 5 residential areas near Thayetpin Gate, Ward 2 near Thepan Gate, lower areas of Khun Sa compound, Sein Nagar Hotel Road, the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1 approach, Asia Highway, Night Market front, Iron Bridge car terminal road, Thayetpin Gate, and Ward 2 Khayan Swe Road areas. Local residents report that continued rainfall in the upper regions, combined with mountain runoff and the Thaungyin River flow, could lead to increased water levels.
The Karen National Union (KNU) has issued a special warning that Cyclone Vipah could affect the Kawthoolei region and southeastern Myanmar on July 23 and 24, potentially causing flooding, landslides, and inundation. Emergency rescue operations are underway for flood victims, and residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the possibility of further flooding.
