The Thai military has officially announced that Cambodia violated the ceasefire agreement by initiating firing in the early morning hours, despite both countries agreeing to a ceasefire from midnight. During peace talks held in Malaysia, the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to an unconditional ceasefire. However, Cambodia began firing at multiple border locations the following morning. While Thailand adhered to the ceasefire agreement, the Royal Thai Army stated that they reserve the right to self-defense in response to Cambodia’s violations.
The scheduled meeting between the armed forces of both countries was postponed from 7 AM to 10 AM, with partial discussions currently ongoing. A Thai Army General condemned Cambodia’s repeated violations, stating that Thailand would respond appropriately while exercising its right to self-defense in accordance with international law. He further emphasized that the world should recognize how Cambodia is disregarding international standards and global commitments, posing a threat to regional and global security by showing contempt for its agreements.
The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand erupted into armed confrontations beginning July 24. Cambodia’s missile attacks into Thai territory have escalated tensions between the two nations. International observers note that Cambodia’s failure to comply with agreements reached during peace talks raises concerns about regional stability and peace. The situation continues to be monitored closely as Cambodia’s violations of the ceasefire agreement threaten to further destabilize the relationship between the two neighboring countries and potentially impact broader regional security.
