A Thai national who assaulted a Myanmar citizen near Pathum Thani Hospital in Thailand and posted a video accusing him of being a fraudster has apologized and paid compensation of 50,000 baht after a police complaint was filed. This information was shared by Ko Ye Min from AAC, who assists Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand.
The incident occurred on July 29, when the case was reported to the local police station. Upon being summoned by the police, the perpetrator admitted to his actions and apologized to the Myanmar victim. He agreed to pay compensation and signed an agreement promising not to cause any further problems. Additionally, he committed to releasing an apology video within three days to acknowledge his wrongdoing.
While such assault cases can result in up to two years imprisonment under Thai law, this particular case was settled through reconciliation at the victim’s request. The victim is revealed to be a father of an eight-month-old child who requires heart surgery. Furthermore, considering that the perpetrator is an influential person in the area, the victim chose to accept the compensation and settle the case to avoid potential long-term complications.
Ko Ye Min from AAC advised that Myanmar workers in Thailand who face similar situations of abuse should contact the MHAC alliance for assistance if they are in the right. He emphasized the importance of Myanmar migrant workers knowing their rights and encouraged them to seek help from relevant organizations when facing difficulties. This case highlights the challenges faced by Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand and the importance of having support systems in place to protect their rights and interests.
