Ta’ang civil society organizations have issued a statement demanding that the Chinese government immediately cease providing military weapons and technology to the Myanmar military council. The statement highlights that China’s cooperation with the military council through the provision of modern military equipment and technology is further enabling the council’s war crimes and international crimes against humanity.
According to the Ta’ang organizations’ statement, the Chinese government, in collaboration with the military council, is exerting political and military pressure to reclaim territories controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). Additionally, China is applying various forms of pressure by cutting off supplies of consumer goods, food items, medicines, and blocking border trade and communication channels.
The Ta’ang organizations have called for all countries, businesses, and neighboring nations currently supplying military equipment, including aviation fuel, to the military council to immediately halt such support. They have also urged for effective economic sanctions against business owners, cronies, and countries collaborating with the military council through economic channels and benefiting from such partnerships.
The organizations have also demanded that the military council, which blatantly violates international laws, be promptly referred to the International Criminal Court for prosecution. They have called for effective humanitarian assistance for war refugees and affected civilians, and for UN member states and the international community to work together with federal units and local governments in Myanmar’s future federal democratic state-building process. These demands reflect the organizations’ commitment to establishing genuine democracy and ending the military council’s oppression of civilians.
