A soldier named Moe Kaung from the Military Council’s No. 2 Communications Unit in Naypyidaw has defected to the People’s Defense Force (PDF) in Wetlet Township on July 1st. According to the Wetlet Township PDF spokesperson, Moe Kaung arrived without weapons and made contact through his family members. The PDF has accepted him and is currently keeping him in a secure location while ensuring his human rights are protected.
Moe Kaung departed from Naypyidaw on June 30th and arrived in Wetlet Township on July 1st. His parents are residents of Wetlet Township, and they had been working on facilitating his defection for approximately two years. Moe Kaung has served in the military for five years and was previously deployed in the Northern Shan State during Operation 1027. After recently returning to Naypyidaw, he made contact with revolutionary forces and decided to defect. The Wetlet Township PDF has confirmed that they will connect him with the People’s Embrace organization and provide necessary support.
The PDF spokesperson emphasized that they will ensure all necessary assistance is provided through coordination with the People’s Embrace organization. They also called upon remaining soldiers within the military council’s forces to defect to the people’s side as soon as possible, encouraging them to join efforts to end the dictatorship system and work towards establishing peace and stability in the country. The spokesperson highlighted the importance of such defections in weakening the military council’s control and hastening the return of democratic governance to Myanmar.
