A military soldier was apprehended by local residents after he broke into a women’s dormitory in Sitapu Ward, Myitkyina, Kachin State, and committed sexual assault against female students. The incident occurred around midnight on September 21, when Private Aung Myo Khant, armed with a weapon, entered the dormitory and demanded money and mobile phones from the female residents. When the young women stated they had no money or phones, he forced them to remove their clothes and sexually assaulted them.
After committing these acts, the soldier attempted to sleep between two female students. However, one of the students managed to seize his weapon and escape, alerting the surrounding community by shouting for help. Local residents, teachers, male dormitory students, and neighbors quickly gathered and collectively apprehended Private Aung Myo Khant. During the incident, the soldier had threatened high school students, demanded their valuables, forced them to undress, line up, and subjected them to sexual harassment and assault.
The apprehended soldier was later handed over to the military-controlled police force when they arrived to collect him. Myitkyina has been experiencing frequent incidents of theft, robbery, and murder, primarily perpetrated by the coup military forces and their affiliates. Local residents are warning each other to remain extremely vigilant due to these security concerns. These incidents reflect the ongoing criminal activities of the military forces and highlight the deteriorating safety situation for civilians in the area.
