The Shwe Thukha Diamond Shop has officially announced the tragic death of its owner, Daw Moe Thida Shwe, who held the title of Thiri Thudhamma Thingyi, and her family members in the collapse of Sky Villa Condominium in Mandalay. The incident occurred at the 11-story Sky Villa Condo located between 22nd and 23rd streets on 60th Road in Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay. The building collapsed and partially sank into the ground following an earthquake on March 28, with only seven floors remaining above ground while four floors subsided below ground level.
According to close associates of the Shwe Thukha Diamond Shop owner, the family was operating their jewelry store on the ground floor of the Sky Villa complex when the earthquake struck. The ground floor, along with several other levels, sank into the earth, resulting in the entire family becoming trapped and ultimately perishing in the disaster. This incident represents one of the most devastating building collapses in Mandalay’s recent history, with multiple casualties reported among the building’s occupants.
Rescue operations are currently underway at an intensive pace as teams work to reach those who may still be trapped in the collapsed structure. The Shwe Thukha Diamond Shop had been a prominent establishment in Mandalay’s jewelry trade for many years, and the sudden loss of the owner’s family has been described as a significant blow to the city’s business community. Local residents have expressed their shock at the sudden tragedy that has befallen one of the city’s well-known business families, noting the shop’s long-standing presence in Mandalay’s commercial landscape and its reputation for quality jewelry and gemstones.
