The earthquake that struck Sagaing city on March 28 has resulted in the destruction of approximately 80% of the entire city, with nearly 50 confirmed deaths so far. However, local residents estimate that the death toll could rise significantly. Current rescue operations face numerous challenges, and the complete destruction of the fire department has severely hampered emergency response capabilities.
Particularly devastating losses occurred at Myat Private Training School, where students were attending classes, and at the Four Islands Brick School, where children were participating in a civics training course. Many children from both institutions have been reported dead. Additionally, three mosques have collapsed, and numerous bodies remain trapped under the debris, currently inaccessible to rescue teams. Local residents report that the damage in Sagaing is even more severe than in Mandalay.
The new Sagaing Bridge has developed significant cracks, and its approach roads have collapsed, completely severing land transportation between Sagaing and Mandalay. As a result, people are forced to rely solely on ferry boats for transportation between the two cities. Rescue teams from Mandalay are experiencing significant difficulties in reaching Sagaing. Currently, city residents can only watch helplessly as they survey the extensive damage throughout their community, according to a local resident.
