A revolutionary Thingyan movement has been carried out in Yangon, with student activists displaying a sign that reads ‘Even the Padauk flowers are crying at what should be a joyous festival.’ The demonstration took place at the busy Kandawgyi area, where revolutionary students conducted their protest activities against the violent military council. The movement aimed to reflect the suffering of the people and express solidarity with those affected by recent disasters.
According to a statement released by the South Dagon Strike Force – Revolutionary Spirit, people are urged to observe the upcoming Thingyan festival days as a period of quiet remembrance for those who have lost their lives. The group strongly criticized the military council’s insensitive decision to continue constructing Thingyan pavilions while people are suffering from the aftermath of the recent earthquake. They emphasized that this action demonstrates the council’s complete disregard for the people’s hardships and suffering.
This year’s Thingyan period has become a time of mourning for Myanmar’s people, especially those in earthquake-affected regions. However, the military council’s continued preparations for festivities while ignoring the people’s suffering clearly demonstrates their lack of empathy towards civilian hardships. The revolutionary students’ movement serves as a symbolic protest against the council’s actions and represents the sentiments of the general public. The contrast between the traditional celebratory nature of Thingyan and the current suffering of the people has been highlighted through this peaceful protest action, emphasizing the military council’s disconnection from the realities faced by ordinary citizens.
