
A military camp in Sagaing City, Sagaing Region, was attacked by revolutionary forces, resulting in nearly an hour-long battle, according to local residents. The clash erupted around 8 PM on August 17 in the western part of Sagaing city, specifically in the areas of Nga Thap Gyi, Phaya Phyu, and surrounding neighborhoods. During the battle, both sides engaged in heavy exchange of artillery and small arms fire, with city residents clearly hearing the sounds of combat throughout the area.
The fighting resulted in artillery and bullet impacts on several monasteries in the city, with a novice monk at Maha Khone Nan Buddhist Learning Center suffering a grazing wound to his temple. According to the monastery’s chief abbot and teaching supervisor U Manita Lankara Bhivamsa, the clash occurred during a scripture recitation session, causing panic among the students. The monastery building sustained damage to its steel pipes and windows. The incident has significantly impacted the religious institution, with both young novices and students experiencing considerable fear and distress during the attack.
Following the battle, the military imposed strict security measures across Sagaing city the next morning, with military vehicles and reinforcements arriving from Mandalay. Local residents report heightened security presence throughout the city, with the military establishing additional checkpoints and restricting civilian movement. The situation has created an atmosphere of tension and concern among the local population, as military forces maintain tight control over the area in the aftermath of the clash.
