Revolutionary forces launched an attack on several government buildings in Thaung Tha city, Mandalay Region, including the Land Registry Office, Tax Department Office, and the residence of Ward 2 Administrator on May 28 afternoon, causing all military council troops to flee the area, according to a spokesperson from the Thaung Tha Township People’s Movement Committee. The revolutionary forces successfully took control of strategic locations including the Zagyan Gate during the operation.
Following the attack, military council troops retreated to Welawng Township area around 8 PM on May 27. They returned to the city on the morning of May 29 after forcibly commandeering two 12-wheel civilian trucks. The military subsequently increased their troop presence and established checkpoints throughout the city. Local sources indicated that the initial military presence during their first entry into the city was significantly smaller than their current deployment. The military council forces are now conducting extensive search and checkpoint operations throughout the city.
While most government offices in Thaung Tha remain closed, the Land Registry Office continues to operate under the direction of Han Thu Ra, the military council-appointed administrative officer, who uses it as a source of income by issuing Form 7 land documents and land grants. This practice has caused controversy among local business owners. The People’s Movement Committee has warned civilians that all administrative actions carried out under the military council’s authority are illegitimate. The committee also emphasized that civilians should avoid close proximity to military council forces due to the possibility of combat operations at any time.
On May 19, revolutionary forces had also conducted an operation at Mingala U Gate in Thaung Tha, during which they detained several military council informants from the staff housing area. This incident has led to security concerns among non-CDM staff and military council informants in the city, causing many to flee. As the Spring Revolution gains momentum and shifts from defensive operations to offensive campaigns, the military council has increased its airstrikes. In response, the resistance has advised civilians to construct proper bomb shelters to ensure their safety during potential aerial attacks.
