Residents from low-lying areas in Myitkyina, Kachin State, are being evacuated to safer locations due to rising water levels in the Irrawaddy River. According to officials from the New Generation Social Rescue Organization, the affected areas include Ram Pu, Kyat Paung Chan, Let Kone, Myint Nyein Aye, and Aung Tan Tar wards. The water levels began rising around 6 PM on May 31, gradually inundating the low-lying areas. However, no casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far.
The New Generation Social Rescue Organization, along with other social organizations and fire brigade members, are conducting rescue operations using motorized boats to help affected residents. According to the military council’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, while the Irrawaddy River’s water level in Myitkyina remains below the danger mark of 1,200 centimeters, it continues to rise and has reached 1,083 centimeters. The department has warned that water levels could reach the danger mark within the next day.
Simultaneously, in Chipwi town in upper Kachin State, heavy rainfall has caused the Maykha River to rise continuously, resulting in the submersion and washing away of houses along the riverbank. The Chipwi bridge has also been submerged, forcing local residents to relocate to higher ground. Although water levels have slightly receded, local residents remain concerned about the situation. Social welfare organizations are standing by to provide emergency assistance to affected residents who need help.
