
The Basic Education Students’ Union of Longlone Township led a public strike movement in the afternoon of July 7, 2023, to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the historic July 7th Student Uprising in Longlone Township, Dawei District, Tanintharyi Region. The movement was organized to honor the brave students who participated in the July 7th Student Uprising and to demonstrate continued resistance against the military dictatorship. The event was conducted under the theme ‘Holding onto the Spirit of July 7th, Overthrowing the Military Throne with the Peacock Flag.’
Participants in the movement marched through the streets with the purpose of maintaining the spirit of July 7th and opposing the military dictatorship. They also conducted ceremonies to honor and pay respects to students and civilians who have sacrificed their lives in various democratic movements from the July 7th uprising until the present day. The participants laid wreaths in memory of the fallen heroes and recited poems opposing the military dictatorship. They also made a collective pledge to continue their united struggle for democracy.
The July 7th Student Uprising represents a significant student movement in Myanmar’s history and stands as a historic rebellion against military dictatorship. Such anniversary commemorations serve to boost the morale of people currently fighting against the military regime and strengthen unity in the struggle for democracy. The event demonstrated that the spirit of resistance and the fight for democratic rights continues to live on through new generations of students and civilians, who remain committed to opposing military rule and working towards a democratic future for Myanmar.
