On June 6, local residents in the Letpadaung mountain region of Salingyi Township, Sagaing Division, conducted a public movement demanding the ratification of Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to save lives. Led by the Letpadaung Public Strike Committee, participants raised their voices against the military dictatorship while holding banners with the message ‘Vote ILO Article 33 to save LIVES’.
The demonstrators carried signs calling for the ratification of ILO Article 33 while collectively raising their voices for anti-dictatorship causes, protection of public rights, and labor rights. The Letpadaung region has been actively involved in anti-dictatorship movements since the beginning of the military coup, consistently standing against military oppression and supporting democratic causes.
This movement represents a call to the international community to take action against the violations of labor rights, forced labor practices, and human rights abuses occurring under the military dictatorship in Myanmar. ILO Article 33 is a provision that would allow member states to implement economic sanctions against countries that violate labor rights. The demonstration highlights the ongoing struggle of Myanmar’s people against military rule and their appeal for international intervention to protect workers’ rights and civilian lives.
