Anti-dictatorship protest groups in the Letpadaung region conducted a public movement on March 18 calling for immediate action against the military council under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). This movement aims to urge the international community to take action against the military council’s violations of workers’ rights. The protest groups have revealed that workers in the Letpadaung region are suffering under the military council’s oppression and facing severe violations of their basic human rights.
Article 33 of the International Labour Organization allows for effective measures to be taken when a member state seriously violates workers’ rights. Currently in Myanmar, the military council is widely committing violations including suppression of labor unions, detention of labor leaders, and infringement of workers’ rights. The protest groups have urged the international community to utilize Article 33 to take effective action against the military council. The movement, titled ‘ILO implement Article 33 On Myanmar Now 2025,’ represents a significant effort by local activists to bring international attention to the deteriorating labor conditions under military rule.
