Anti-dictatorship protest groups in the Letpadaung region conducted a public movement on March 18 calling for immediate action against the violent military council under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). This movement aims to urge the international community to take action against the military council’s violations of workers’ rights. The demonstration was organized to protest against the military council’s labor rights violations, forced labor practices, and oppression of working people in the Letpadaung region.
Article 33 of the International Labour Organization is a crucial provision that enables effective action to be taken when a member state severely violates workers’ rights. Currently in Myanmar, the military council is widely perpetrating labor rights violations, including the suppression of labor unions, detention of labor leaders, forced labor practices, and unfair wage practices. The situation for workers under the military council’s violent oppression has been deteriorating, with increasing rights violations, demonstrating the urgent need for effective international intervention.
The movement, led by Letpadaung region’s anti-dictatorship protest groups, saw participation from local residents who collectively called on the International Labour Organization to take action against labor rights violations in Myanmar. This public demonstration highlights the growing need for effective international action as workers’ conditions continue to worsen under the military council’s oppressive regime. The protesters emphasized that the military council’s ongoing violations of workers’ rights and fundamental freedoms require immediate attention and action from the international community through the implementation of ILO Article 33.
