On March 12, the Letpadaung Anti-Dictatorship Strike Force conducted a public movement calling for immediate action against the military council under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). This movement aims to bring international attention to the military council’s violations of workers’ rights and strengthen enforcement measures against these violations. The campaign specifically focused on implementing Article 33 of the ILO convention in Myanmar by 2025.
Article 33 of the International Labour Organization provides member states with the authority to impose economic sanctions against countries that violate workers’ rights. Currently, the military council is severely violating basic workers’ rights through widespread use of forced labor, child labor, inadequate wage payment, and restrictions on freedom of association. The Letpadaung region has been particularly affected by these violations, leading local activists to organize this public movement to demand immediate international action.
Through this movement, the Letpadaung Anti-Dictatorship Strike Force called on the ILO to implement Article 33 measures against Myanmar. They also urged the international community to increase economic sanctions against the military council and pressure them to cease their violations of workers’ rights. The movement represents a significant step in documenting and highlighting the ongoing labor rights violations under military rule, while seeking concrete international action to address these issues through established legal mechanisms.
