
According to reports from Yangon, a public movement was held in Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, to commemorate the 80th birthday of democratic leader and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on June 17. During the movement, local residents held photographs of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and offered birthday wishes.
Participants in the movement prayed for the release of all political prisoners detained by the military council, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and renewed their commitment to continue the struggle for democracy. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained by the military council since the February 1, 2021 coup and has been sentenced to prison terms on unjust charges.
This movement in Shwebo Township demonstrates the Myanmar people’s unwavering spirit for democracy and their continued trust and respect for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, according to participants. Those who joined the movement conducted their demonstration peacefully and offered prayers for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health and liberation. The gathering reflected the ongoing resistance against military rule and the public’s dedication to the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
