The 5/SLG Public Protest Movement Network in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region, has conducted a public awareness campaign against the illegal election. The movement involved posting protest messages on electrical poles in villages where employees of China’s Wanbao Company, which collaborates with the violent military council, reside. The campaign specifically targeted areas connected to the Chinese company that has been accused of supporting the military’s actions against Myanmar civilians.
The posted messages urged people to resist the illegitimate mock election through public power and warned against legitimizing violence through voting. The messages explicitly stated ‘Fight the illegal fake election with people’s power, don’t give license to kill through your vote.’ This grassroots movement represents local resistance against the military council’s planned election and reflects the will of the local population who oppose both the military regime and its business collaborators.
In the Salingyi region, China’s Wanbao Company has been operating in partnership with the military council, leading local residents to believe that the company is both directly and indirectly supporting the military’s brutal actions against civilians. This public movement not only demonstrates opposition to the military council’s illegal election but also shows resistance against businesses that collaborate with the regime. The action represents a significant statement by local activists who continue to resist both the military council’s political maneuvers and its economic partnerships that sustain its rule.
