On February 1, 2021, at 5:00 AM, two generals from the terrorist military arrested President Win Myint and pressured him to sign a resignation letter citing health reasons. However, President Win Myint refused to sign, stating he would rather die. This account was revealed during his testimony at the Zabuthiri Township Court in Naypyidaw on October 12, 2021.
According to President Win Myint’s testimony, that morning, armed soldiers entered the Presidential Palace and found him in his nightwear. The soldiers ordered him to change clothes and escorted him to the Presidential Office. President Win Myint was allowed to take his medications and prayer books, and after performing his prayers, he accompanied the military. Throughout the route, he observed armed soldiers positioned everywhere.
In a room at the Presidential Office, two senior generals demanded the President’s resignation citing health reasons. However, the President refused, stating that he would rather die than resign, and urged the military to act according to law and not to seize power. Subsequently, the President was returned to his residence where he was placed under 24-hour surveillance, and all his communication devices were confiscated.
On February 4, the President and his family were relocated to a house in the Ministers’ Residential Complex, and on May 5, they were moved to another location. At the final location, the President was completely cut off from the outside world and was not allowed access to any news media, according to court testimonies.
