The Dagon University Students’ Union has announced that the health condition of political prisoner Ma Wut Yee Aung, who is currently detained in Yangon’s Insein Prison, has reached a critical state. Ma Wut Yee Aung, who has been unjustly detained by the military council, suffered head injuries during interrogation and is now experiencing severe symptoms including loss of consciousness, seizures, and cardiac arrests. Her deteriorating health condition has raised serious concerns among human rights activists and fellow students.
On the evening of April 25, Ma Wut Yee Aung was rushed to Insein Hospital due to her worsening health condition. However, she was returned to the prison without receiving adequate medical treatment. Ma Wut Yee Aung, who serves as a central executive committee member of the Dagon University Students’ Union, was arrested by the military council on September 14, 2021. Subsequently, the military council sentenced her to three years in prison under Section 505(a) and an additional four years under Section 52(a).
Currently, Ma Wut Yee Aung’s health condition remains critically concerning, and there are serious fears for her life due to the lack of proper medical care. The Students’ Union has reported that the inadequate healthcare provisions within the prison system and ongoing human rights violations against political prisoners continue to put inmates’ lives at risk. Activists have highlighted the persistent pattern of insufficient medical care and human rights abuses in military-controlled detention facilities, emphasizing the urgent need for proper medical attention for all political prisoners.
