On July 22 in Yangon, as Typhoon Wipha weakened to a strong tropical storm, members of the People’s Defense Force are conducting awareness campaigns to prepare residents living in lowland areas and near riverbanks for potential flash flood dangers across Myanmar. The PDF members are delivering educational talks and distributing informational leaflets about necessary preparations and guidelines that people should follow regarding flood and river surge hazards.
This flood warning leaflet distribution and awareness campaign is being carried out as a joint effort between the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Defense People’s Defense Force, Naypyidaw Regional Military Command’s Public Security Department, and local People’s Defense Force members. These preparatory measures aim to enable effective response to potential flooding emergencies and protect people’s lives and property.
Due to the effects of Storm Wipha, Myanmar may experience heavy rainfall that could lead to river flooding and stream surges. The awareness campaign particularly emphasizes the need for residents in riverside areas and low-lying regions to remain vigilant and prepare for potential evacuation to safer locations in case of emergency. Additionally, emergency contact numbers and addresses of rescue teams are being distributed to the public. The preventive measures focus on ensuring communities are well-informed and prepared to respond to any flooding incidents that may occur due to the storm’s impact.
