Thai police are conducting an intensive search operation following a major robbery at the Aurora Gold Shop in Mae Sot, where more than one viss (1.63 kg) of gold was stolen during an evening heist. The incident occurred at the gold shop located inside the Tesco Lotus department store, when an armed robber dressed in a Line Man Delivery uniform and riding a black motorcycle carried out the theft. The robbery took place during the busy evening hours, with the perpetrator threatening staff with a firearm before making off with the valuable merchandise.
Following the robbery, which occurred at approximately 7:20 PM on March 2, police have established multiple checkpoints throughout Mae Sot and its surrounding areas. Law enforcement officials have intensified their search efforts, with increased security measures at all city exit points and detailed inspections of suspicious vehicles and individuals. Initial police investigations suggest that the perpetrator might be a Thai national, based on preliminary evidence and witness accounts. The authorities are currently focusing their investigation on the suspect’s physical description and the motorcycle used in the crime.
The total amount of gold stolen in the robbery amounts to 102 ticals (approximately 1.67 kg), representing a significant monetary value. Fortunately, no staff members or customers were injured during the incident, as the robber only used the weapon to threaten rather than cause physical harm. Local sources in Mae Sot have advised Myanmar nationals without proper documentation to exercise caution while moving around the city, as police checkpoints and security measures have been significantly increased. The heightened security measures throughout Mae Sot and its outskirts have resulted in extensive checks and verification procedures, making it particularly challenging for undocumented individuals to move freely in the area.
