
In Taungoo, Bago Region, over 3,000 people have been evacuated to safe locations due to rising water levels in the Sittoung River, with four flood relief camps established, according to humanitarian groups providing flood assistance. Flooding has occurred in Wards 1, 8, 9, and 10 of Taungoo city, as well as in Thapanseik village in Taungoo Township, where rescue operations for flood victims are still ongoing.
Flood victims are in need of food and clothing, and many are suffering from cold-related illnesses. Currently, the Sittoung River water level has exceeded the danger mark by about 2 feet in Taungoo and about 5.5 feet in Madauk, with further rises expected, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. Additionally, flooding has been reported in the Shwegyin River, Thanlwin River, Thaungyin River, Bilin River, and Mae Sai Creek.
Residents living along riverbanks and in low-lying areas in Taungoo, Shwegyin, Hpa-an, Myawaddy, Bilin, and Madauk townships have been warned to evacuate to safer locations. The National Unity Government’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management has announced that from July 28 to August 3, the southwest monsoon is expected to intensify from strong to very strong, leading to scattered to widespread thundershowers across Myanmar, with isolated thundershowers in the Magway Region.
