
The Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee has announced that over 100 villages are currently submerged and 55 schools have been temporarily closed in Kyaukkyi and Mone Townships of Nyaunglebin District, Bago Region. Since July 24, approximately 80 villages in Kyaukkyi Township have been flooded, affecting over 30,000 acres of paddy fields and forcing the temporary closure of 37 schools due to heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Sittaung River.
The affected village tracts in Kyaukkyi Township include Htaw War Seik, Hintha Way, Kyauk Hmaw Pagoda, Padae Kaw, Wet La Taw, Na Yoe Pin, Auk Chin Kone, Pattala, Let Way Gyi, Saw Mu Thae, Kyun Gyi, Kawtharsay, Moe Kho, Ma Bi, Taw Kyaung Pauk, Let Kauk Wa, Pauk Taw, Kywe Talan, Kyaung Kone, In Tain Kone, Lein Pin Way, Ma Ma Yan, Nat Than Kwin, and Kyauk Ket Gyi. These village tracts comprise 5,495 households with a total population of 28,162 residents.
Similarly, in Mone Township, 57 villages have been submerged since July 23, with 14 houses being swept away by floodwaters and 4,250 acres of farmland inundated. Eighteen schools have been temporarily closed. The affected villages include Wet Tu, Way Gyi Karen/Burmese, Meikthalin, Nga Htwe Soke, Say Palae, Htuni Kone, Thapay Kone, Thet Cha Seik, Nyaung Pin Seik, Myaung Yo Gyi, Mwe Twin, Seik Gaung, Cho Myaing, Nyaung Pin Tha, Daik Pon, Naung Cho, and Thet Chauk Pin, among others.
