According to reports from Malaysia, more than 100 Myanmar citizens have been arrested in Kuala Lumpur and Puchong for illegal residence. On the morning of September 11, Malaysian Immigration authorities and police conducted a raid in the Setapak KL residential area of Kuala Lumpur, resulting in the arrest of 125 illegal foreign nationals. Among those arrested were 69 Myanmar citizens, 25 Indians, 14 Pakistanis, 12 Indonesians, and 5 Bangladeshi nationals.
According to a Myanmar citizen in Malaysia, the arrests were made following a tip-off, and all those arrested were found to be without valid documentation. The source mentioned that the increasing number of operators in Malaysia and arrests due to non-compliance with residential regulations has become detrimental to Myanmar citizens. The situation has become particularly concerning as many Myanmar nationals face difficulties maintaining proper documentation due to the current political situation in their home country.
Additionally, on September 8, Malaysian Immigration authorities conducted a separate raid at a food court in Puchong, Selangor state, where they arrested 41 Myanmar citizens for illegal stay. The Malaysian government typically proceeds with immediate deportation of arrested Myanmar citizens back to Myanmar. According to the Myanmar community in Malaysia, those deported often include military service evaders, Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) participants, and military defectors. This situation has created particular concern among the Myanmar community in Malaysia, as many of those being deported face potential persecution upon their return to Myanmar under the current military regime.
