More than 100 people have died and thousands of homes were destroyed in the Inle region of Nyaung Shwe Township, Southern Shan State, following the Sagaing earthquake that struck on March 28. The earthquake, which occurred at 12:52 PM, caused widespread destruction across several villages including Inn Gyi Htaung, Kyay Sar Kone, Kela, Zayat Gyi, and Paypin Inn villages. Local residents have been forced to evacuate their homes due to safety concerns and are currently seeking shelter in Nyaung Shwe town and Phaya Kone areas.
According to local residents, in Kela village alone, more than 800 houses were destroyed, while in Zayat Gyi village, over 100 houses were damaged. The earthquake also caused extensive damage to electrical infrastructure, with numerous power poles collapsing, leading to significant power supply disruptions throughout the region. Currently, displaced residents are living in temporary shelters and are in urgent need of emergency assistance, including food supplies, drinking water, medical supplies, and other essential items. The situation remains critical as many families have lost their homes and possessions.
While rescue operations are ongoing in the earthquake-affected areas, local residents report that the aid received so far is insufficient to meet the growing needs of the displaced population. There is particular concern for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and pregnant women who require special care and medical attention but are facing difficulties accessing healthcare services. Additionally, the continued aftershocks have left residents fearful and hesitant to return to their homes, even in cases where structures remain partially intact. The local community is calling for increased support and emergency assistance to help address the immediate humanitarian needs and begin the process of rebuilding their devastated communities.
