A one-year-old child sleeping in a cradle was killed instantly when the Myanmar military fired artillery shells at Laytaungya village in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region. The incident occurred around 10 PM on August 5, 2023, when military forces stationed in Tanintharyi Township launched an unprovoked artillery attack on Laytaungya village. The artillery shell struck where the infant was sleeping, resulting in immediate death.
According to local residents, the military fired artillery shells into the village three times, with the final shell directly hitting the child. Currently, the military is regularly firing artillery at villages throughout Tanintharyi Township without any ongoing battles, prompting revolutionary forces to warn local residents to remain extremely vigilant. These deliberate attacks on innocent civilians have severely disrupted daily life in the region and created life-threatening conditions for local residents.
As the military’s offensive operations in Tanintharyi Region have intensified, attacks targeting civilians have also increased. The military’s actions, including artillery strikes on villages and burning of properties, have forced many local residents to flee their homes, facing challenges related to basic necessities and security. While revolutionary forces in the region are working to ensure civilian safety to the best of their ability, innocent civilians continue to lose their lives due to the military’s violent attacks. The situation has created an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, with displaced residents struggling with food security, shelter, and constant threats to their safety.
