Local sources reported that one internally displaced person (IDP) was killed when the military council forces launched artillery attacks on Naung Pein village in Kyaukme Township, Shan State. The attack occurred around 12 noon on July 26, when military council troops stationed in Nawnghkio Township fired at least 8 artillery shells at Naung Pein village. The bombardment resulted in the death of a 26-year-old fish vendor who had fled from Nawnghkio town, after he was struck in the head by artillery shrapnel and died instantly. Four other civilians were also injured in the attack.
The artillery shells landed and exploded within Naung Pein village, causing fear and panic among local residents. Following the attack, military council forces and the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) held discussions in the evening of the same day, reaching an agreement to cease further attacks on Naung Pein village. While the exact details of the negotiations remain unclear, military sources confirmed that the military council has guaranteed they will not conduct additional attacks. Local military observers have verified this development, though they noted that the specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed beyond the military council’s commitment to halt offensive operations in the area.
