A heavy artillery shell fired from the Northern Command Headquarters of the military council in Myitkyina, Kachin State, struck the Malikha Housing complex where government employees reside, resulting in one death, according to local residents and sources from the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on April 25, 2025. The indiscriminate artillery fire from the Northern Command Headquarters hit the residential area housing Non-CDM staff members, causing one fatality and significant damage to the residential buildings.
According to a local resident, the Northern Command Headquarters conducted continuous artillery fire throughout the night, presumably targeting the Waingmaw area. Although there were no direct battles in Myitkyina city, residents expressed concerns about potential military escalation in the area. A KIA source confirmed that the artillery shell that struck the Malikha Housing complex was indeed fired by the military forces.
This incident represents another case of civilian casualties resulting from the military council’s indiscriminate shelling, highlighting the ongoing destruction of civilian lives and property due to military artillery attacks. Local residents continue to live in fear even within their own homes, constantly worried about when the next artillery strike might impact their area. The incident demonstrates the military council’s disregard for civilian safety and the persistent threat faced by residents in areas under military operations, even in locations supposedly under their control such as government housing complexes.
