According to local residents, one civilian was killed, three others were injured, and a civilian vehicle was destroyed in an attack by the military council using artillery and drones near Ingwon village in Longlone Township, Tanintharyi Region. The incident occurred around 12:40 PM on May 16, when military council troops from the Border Areas and National Races Development Department (Na Ta La) office launched an unprovoked attack on the area without any ongoing fighting.
Military council troops stationed at the Na Ta La office across the Dawei River conducted the attack using heavy weapons and drones, resulting in injuries to four civilians, one of whom later died due to severe injuries. Additionally, a civilian vehicle was destroyed by fire in the attack. According to a local resident, the victims were from Ingwon village, and it appears the attack may have targeted people traveling on the road. The military council troops deliberately carried out this attack despite there being no active conflict in the area.
This deliberate attack by the military council constitutes a war crime against innocent civilians, and targeting civilians in areas where there is no active conflict violates international humanitarian law. The military council continues to carry out such attacks that result in the loss of lives, homes, and property of local residents. The incident demonstrates the ongoing pattern of the military council’s deliberate targeting of civilian populations, causing destruction to lives and property in areas under their control.
