The death toll continues to rise following a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar. In Mandalay, the collapse of the Sky Villa condominium has claimed the lives of Daw Moe Thida Shwe, the owner of Thuka Diamond jewelry store, and her family members, according to an official announcement from Thuka Diamond. Additionally, more than 80 Buddhist monks who were taking examinations at the U Hla Thein Religious Building in Mandalay were reported to have passed away when the structure collapsed during the earthquake, as confirmed by resident monks from the monastery.
In Sagaing Region, the aftermath of the severe earthquake has resulted in the destruction of approximately 80 percent of Sagaing city. The death toll is expected to reach hundreds, with nearly 50 confirmed casualties already reported. The situation is particularly concerning as there is currently no rescue personnel available to conduct emergency operations, and the entire fire department building has been destroyed, hampering immediate rescue efforts. The extensive damage includes religious buildings, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure throughout the affected areas.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction to buildings, pagodas, educational institutions, medical facilities, and basic infrastructure. Local residents whose homes have been destroyed are now seeking shelter in temporary camps and makeshift accommodations, requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. The natural disaster has created an immediate need for emergency relief operations, and international aid is critically required to support the affected population. The situation remains dire as communities struggle to cope with the devastating impact of the earthquake, with many areas still unable to receive proper emergency assistance due to the extensive damage to rescue facilities and infrastructure.
