Dr. Win Myat Aye, a minister from the National Unity Government (NUG), has warned that the military is controlling humanitarian aid funds provided by the international community for Myanmar’s earthquake victims. He made these remarks while attending the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly and related meetings in Uzbekistan from April 5 to April 9. The minister expressed serious concerns about the military’s control over international humanitarian aid funds and the possibility of these resources being used to continue military aggression against civilians. He emphasized that such a situation cannot be accepted.
Dr. Win Myat Aye urged the international community to speak out for immediate humanitarian assistance access to the people of Myanmar, genuine ceasefire implementation, and the cessation of airstrikes. He revealed that even during the earthquake crisis, the military council has continued targeting civilians across the country, conducting 63 airstrikes in 32 townships within just one week. Despite the National Unity Government and Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs) declaring a ceasefire to facilitate emergency aid delivery to earthquake-affected regions, the military has persisted with its attacks.
The minister highlighted that during their four-year seizure of power, the military dictators have continued killing civilians with impunity, as military leaders remain free from punishment, leading to ongoing destruction of people’s lives and properties. He informed the international community that the March 28 powerful earthquake resulted in nearly 3,500 deaths and approximately 5,000 injuries. Many survivors are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, lacking shelter, food, water, and medical care. The situation remains critical as affected populations struggle without access to basic necessities and emergency support.
