The National Unity Government (NUG) spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw has warned that ASEAN’s neglect of the military council leader Min Aung Hlaing and his council’s violent actions against Myanmar’s people could significantly impact the country’s peace and stability. This statement was made during today’s Press Briefing session addressing the public and international community.
Despite declaring a ceasefire during the Sagaing earthquake on March 28, the military council continued its aerial attacks on civilians. From the earthquake until April 23, they conducted 196 airstrikes and 64 artillery attacks across the country, including earthquake-affected areas. These attacks resulted in 235 civilian deaths and 427 injuries, as detailed by U Kyaw Zaw. The spokesperson emphasized that the military council’s brutal actions against Myanmar’s people cannot be ignored by ASEAN if any meaningful progress towards peace is to be achieved.
The National Unity Government has established over 350 People’s Defense Force battalions for military operations against the council and has organized defense groups in 235 townships. U Kyaw Zaw stressed that ASEAN must officially engage with the National Unity Government and revolutionary forces to find a political solution, as this is the only path to achieving lasting peace and stability in Myanmar. He emphasized that the military council is not the solution to Myanmar’s crisis, and only through legitimate political dialogue with democratic forces can sustainable peace be achieved.
