The National Unity Government (NUG) has officially notified the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the investment and economic agreements signed during military council leader Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Russia are invalid, according to NUG Presidential Office spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw. Min Aung Hlaing visited Russia and Belarus from March 3 to 9, during which he signed various agreements related to arms purchases, illegal fundraising, and other economic matters.
U Kyaw Zaw revealed that Min Aung Hlaing’s trip was solely aimed at supporting the military’s grip on power, purchasing weapons, seeking illegal funding sources, and exploiting Myanmar’s labor force. He further stated that the visit was an attempt to boost the morale of the losing military forces and to seek political legitimacy through fraudulent elections. The NUG has emphasized that these agreements signed with the military council have no long-term viability for sustainable investment, as communicated to the Russian government through official channels.
The National Unity Government has declared that it will only recognize and honor international agreements and treaties that were signed before the military coup. The NUG has explicitly stated that it does not recognize permits and approvals issued by the military council’s Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC). Through Notification Order 1/2021, the NUG’s Ministry of Planning, Finance and Investment has suspended all investment permits issued after February 1, 2021, when the illegal military coup took place. The government has warned international investors to cease all investment activities that operate under military council approvals and has ordered the immediate suspension of any ongoing projects that were authorized by the military regime.
