The National Unity Government’s Presidential Office spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw has revealed that the NUG has officially notified the Russian Foreign Ministry that investment and economic agreements signed with the military council during Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Russia are invalid. He made this announcement during a press briefing to the public and international community regarding the matter.
Military leader Min Aung Hlaing visited Russia and Belarus from March 3 to 9, during which he sought to secure weapons purchases, illegal funding channels, and discussed labor export arrangements that would exploit Myanmar’s workers. According to U Kyaw Zaw, the trip was also aimed at falsely boosting the morale of the losing military forces and seeking political solutions through fraudulent elections. The spokesperson emphasized that these agreements with the military council would not benefit long-term sustainable investments.
The National Unity Government has stated that it will only honor agreements and treaties, including border agreements, that were signed between countries prior to the military coup. The NUG has issued orders to immediately cease all investment activities conducted under permits and approvals from the illegal military council’s Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC). Through Notification No. 1/2021, the NUG’s Ministry of Planning, Finance and Investment has declared a complete suspension of all investment permits and approvals issued since February 1, 2021, when the military council illegally seized power. The government maintains that any business activities conducted under the military council’s authority are illegitimate and must be halted without exception.
