The National Unity Government (NUG) Interim President Duwa Lashi La has stated that China’s intervention in Myanmar’s affairs should not contribute to prolonging the military dictatorship. This statement was made during the NUG’s 13/2025 meeting held on April 29. The Interim President emphasized that the National Unity Government is not China’s enemy and that China’s mediation efforts in Myanmar should not serve to sustain the military dictatorship system. He also stressed the need for China to recalibrate its perspective regarding the NUG.
The Interim President noted that China has been approaching the National Unity Government with various preconceptions for quite some time, and this issue needs to be addressed seriously by the government. He emphasized that the NUG needs to explicitly state that it is neither China’s enemy nor an organization that would harm Chinese interests. The NUG maintains a foreign policy based on peaceful coexistence with China, and therefore should clearly communicate that it is not an adversarial force to China. The Interim President further explained that regarding Chinese interests within Myanmar, the NUG would not be an obstacle but rather a cooperative partner, and this message should be conveyed to the Chinese side.
Myanmar is a sovereign independent nation, and regional organizations such as ASEAN have firmly embedded the principle of non-interference in internal affairs in their charter. However, as China’s regional influence grows, it has become increasingly active in mediating Myanmar’s situation. The Interim President observed that China’s current mediation efforts appear to be merely temporary relief, like a ‘quick fix,’ for Myanmar’s crisis. He suggested that only broader approaches to mediation would serve as a long-term solution. The recent Chinese involvement in Myanmar’s internal affairs, particularly regarding the MNDAA’s handover of Lashio city to the military council, has been strongly criticized by the Myanmar people and revolutionary forces as an action supporting the military junta.
